Where and How does Mold Grow?

Molds are micro organisms that are all around us, both indoors and outside. There are three main ingredients to mold growth.

• Darkness - (e.g. low sun or u.v. lighting) Sun light or ultra violet lighting demotes mold grow. You can see the result of this on the north side of homes and structures, in air handling units, and in basements and crawl spaces for example.
• Moisture - Water is the second ingredients which is needed. Water infiltration issues should be addressed as soon as they are discovered. Such as basement and crawl space leaks, roofing leaks, high condensation on windows, and high R.H. (or absolute humidity). The EPA says problems with R.H. begin indoors at just 50% R.H.
• Nutrients - Nutrients are organic or cellulose materials such as wood, paper, carpet, and foods. When excessive moister is present indoors, molds can begin to grow.
